CHANGANASSERY: The Nair Service Society (NSS) has demanded a
status akin to backward communities in the matter of reservation and other
benefits for government jobs and admission to courses in educational institutions
in the state. Moving a step further from the organisation’s long pending demand
for economic reservation for the poor among all communities, the NSS, through a
resolution has called upon the Central and State Governments to effect measures
to undo the injustice meted out for long to certain sections through the
existing ‘unscientific and discriminatory’ reservation system.
NSS general secretary P K Narayana Panicker and assistant
secretary G Sukumaran Nair clarified to mediapersons here that the demand for
backward community status for Nairs is being sought even while remaining firm
on the demand for economic reservation for the poor in all communities.
Political parties irrespective of left and right leanings are one
and the same in neglecting the Nair community.
Reserving its comments on the Justice Ranganatha Mishra panel
report, the NSS leaders, however, took exception to recommendations for
backward class status and reservation for Christians and Muslims in the
country, in addition to the existing minority community reservation benefits.
“The NSS will have to go through the recommendations of the panel
in detail. Anyway, it is certain that there is no need for any additional
special reservation for Christians and Muslims in the country,” Sukumaran Nair
emphasised.
Asked whether a constitutional amendment is imperative for
granting backward class status and benefits for the Nair community, he affirmed
that no such thing is necessary.
Sukumaran Nair reiterated the demand for economic reservation to
the poor in the forward communities and felt that the LDF government, of late,
seems to be adopting a mature stance on the issue. He also said the State
Government is apparently studying the various aspects of constitution of the
Travancore and Kochi Devaswom Boards as well as the core issues related to the
crisis in the education sector. “The government approach is hopeful. But that
doesn’t mean the NSS is supporting the LDF government or has deviated from the
equidistance policy,” he said.
On the standoff with the Congress leadership, Panicker and
Sukumaran Nair reiterated that the grouse of the organisation that adequate
representation is not being given by the party for community members while
selecting candidates to contest in various elections is indeed an issue and
still persists. But since discussions are still on in the issue with the
Congress leadership, it is not fair to comment more,” they maintained. To a
query, they added that no deadline has been set by the NSS to settle the rift.
Reconstitution of Devaswom boards sought
The delegates session, through another resolution, has sought the
immediate constitution of Travancore and Kochi devaswom boards in accordance
with the Travancore-Cochin Hindu Religious Institutions Act 1950. The
resolution pointed out that though activities related to Sabarimala is somehow
being carried out, the administrative affairs and development as well as income
in thousands of temples under the two boards have been badly hit owing to the
fact that the reconstituted Boards is not in place since the last seven months.
There were moves to amend the law with a suspected objective to dilute the
autonomous character of the Boards, the resolution pointed out.
